Dandruff and an Itchy Scalp When the Weather Cools

White flakes and an itchy scalp often worsen as Hyderabad dries out. The pattern on the scalp decides the shampoo, not the brand on the shelf.

In short

Dandruff is flaking of the scalp, often with itch, and it is a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis linked to yeast that normally lives on skin. Cold, dry weather and stress can make flakes more obvious. An anti-dandruff shampoo left on the scalp can settle mild cases. Thick scale, hair loss in the flaky area, or a rash on the face needs an examination at Dr. L. Divya Skin Clinic in Miyapur.

What the flakes usually mean

Loose white or yellowish scale on an itchy scalp is the usual picture of dandruff. Dermatologists treat much of it as the mild end of seborrheic dermatitis. The same yeast-related rash can sit in the eyebrows, the beard, behind the ears, and beside the nose.

Cooler, drier weeks make the scale more obvious, which is why November brings more itchy scalps even when the person has not changed shampoo. Stress and missed washes do the same. Neither one proves an infection you can pass on a comb.

What helps before the visit

For mild flakes, a shampoo with ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, or coal tar is the usual first step. The ingredient has to sit on the scalp. Rinsing it off like a fragrance shampoo wastes it. A pharmacist can point to a product if you do not yet have one.

Oil left on the scalp overnight feels soothing and often makes greasy scale thicker. Hot water dries the surface and can worsen itch. If the face is red and flaky as well, mention that at the clinic so the plan covers skin, not only hair.

  • Treat the scalp for a few weeks before judging the shampoo
  • Keep fragrance and alcohol-heavy styling products off an inflamed scalp
  • Bring the bottle you already used to the appointment

When the scalp needs examining

See a dermatologist if the itch is severe, the scalp is swollen or painful, flakes continue after about four weeks of a proper anti-dandruff shampoo, hair is falling in the scaly area, or the rash has moved onto the face or body. Psoriasis, fungus, and eczema can all look like stubborn dandruff at home.

At the Miyapur clinic the scalp is examined in person. A photograph of a pillow does not separate these patterns. Call +91 90635 55040 if the scale is spreading quickly or a child has a bald patch with scale.

Questions patients ask

No. Yeast that normally lives on skin, oil, and skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis drive most flakes. Washing less often can make loose scale easier to see. Scrubbing the scalp raw does not treat the cause.

Put it on the scalp, not only the hair lengths, and leave it on for the time written on the bottle, often several minutes, before rinsing. Mild dandruff is given a few weeks. If one ingredient does nothing, a different active ingredient is a fair next step. Curly hair usually needs less frequent washing than straight hair.

Silvery plaques with a sharp edge can be psoriasis. A bald, scaly patch in a child can be scalp fungus. Greasy yellow scale on the eyebrows and sides of the nose is seborrheic dermatitis beyond the scalp. Those patterns need to be seen, because the shampoo is not the same.
