Acne Causes and Treatment Options: A Dermatologist’s Guide

Acne is a medical pattern of blocked and inflamed pores, not a hygiene failure. Treatment follows the type of spots you have.

What acne actually is

A pore blocks when oil and dead skin cells collect. If the opening stays closed or dark, you see a whitehead or blackhead. If inflammation follows, the spot becomes red, tender, or filled with pus. Deeper inflammation creates nodules.

This can happen on the face, chest, and back. It is common in adolescence because hormones increase oil, and it continues or starts in many adults.

What usually does not explain it

Dirty skin is not the cause. Scrubbing harder often irritates the barrier and leaves more marks. Heavy, occlusive makeup and hair products can worsen comedones, which is different from blaming normal washing.

A single food rarely accounts for a severe pattern. If you notice a consistent personal trigger, mention it at the visit rather than starting a strict diet from social media.

How a dermatologist chooses treatment

Comedones, inflamed pimples, nodules, and scars are not treated with the same first step. A plan might include a topical retinoid, benzoyl peroxide, a short course of oral antibiotics, hormonal treatment, or isotretinoin in selected people.

Isotretinoin is effective for many severe cases and also has important cautions, especially pregnancy prevention and mood and lipid monitoring. It should not be borrowed from another patient.

  • Stop picking, which drives dark marks and scars
  • Introduce one active product at a time
  • Use sunscreen if a retinoid or procedure is part of the plan

Marks are not the same as scars

Flat brown or red marks after a spot often fade slowly once acne is controlled. Indented ice-pick, boxcar, or rolling scars, and raised scars, are structural. Peels, microneedling, or laser treatment are discussed only for the scar type in front of the doctor.

The Miyapur clinic’s acne information describes judging procedural change over more than one session. That is a timetable for review, not a promise of clearance.
